Japan Prime Minister Fighting For Political Life

Friday, June 3, 2011
Embattled Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan faces a no-confidence vote with a sizeable revolt expected from his own party, leaving the result balanced on a knife-edge.

Opposition parties in the lower house of parliament Wednesday submitted the motion against Kan, struggling with recovery efforts after the earthquake and tsunami in March that sparked a nuclear crisis, and a flagging economy.

His centre-left Democratic Party of Japan and its junior coalition partner have a majority but the motion could pass if about a quarter of DPJ lawmakers back it.

The contest is too close to call, according to Japanese media.
