Two-time Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards was indicted for using campaign funds to cover up his extra-marital affair. Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, died last December at the age of 61 of cancer. Faced with the charges that he illegally used campaign funds to cover up his affair, Edwards pled not guilty. The political figure indicated that his actions were in fact wrong, and he takes full responsibility for this actions, but he does not believe what he did was illegal.

The six charges against John Edwards includes conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and a charge that he made false statements to federal officials.

Edwards' attorney claims that the nearly one million dollars Edwards received during his 2008 campaign from his various friends were personal gifts, not contributions to his campaign, therefore the claim is that Edwards did not break the law.

Conviction could result in as much as five years in prison, and a $250,000 fine on each of the six counts.
